Recently, we were blessed by the presence of a Pileated Woodpecker who decide that our yard was his new playground. He comes every day now and drums on our Pine tree. We are thrilled to have him and created suet bird feeders to encourage him to stay as long as possible. Below is the suet recipe that we use to lure our friend, the Pileated Woodpecker and other birds to our yard.

Build a Suet Bird Feeder from a Log

Pileated Woodpecker photo by jgates513

Recently, a new friend arrived in our neighborhood, Mr. Pileated Woodpecker. I’ve lived in Maine for over 14 years now and I’ve only heard their calls. Never have I been graced by their presence.  It all started the day my partner, Mark was going for a walk in the woods to think. Suddenly he heard a loud screech. When he looked up, he saw a massive woodpecker in the tree next to him. He followed him from tree to tree that day deep into the woods. He came home excited as this has only been his second Pileated woodpecker siting and he’s lived in Southern Maine his entire life. After that fateful day, our friend decided we were okay and started hanging out in our backyard munching on one of our pine trees. Knowing that Pileated woodpeckers tend to be on the elusive side, I wanted to build a suet log bird feeder to help him stay fed and happy throughout the winter. Who knows maybe he’ll decide to stay with us a little bit longer.

Below are instructions on how you can build your own suet bird feeder from logs in your backyard. If you don’t feel like being crafty but are looking for a way to lure Pileated Woodpeckers or other birds to your backyard, I listed a few great log bird feeders that you may like to buy at the bottom of this post.

There is so much to love about this rustic bathroom showcased as a double bathroom vanity by Better Homes and Gardens. While I am not a huge fan of double vanity’s (think more to clean,) I like the look of this and went in search of ways to duplicate this in my home. Here is what I found.

My hope is to Inspire

Welcome to my new blog.  I started this blog because I found myself spending countless hours on Pintrest.com bookmarking things I love and want to create. Often, I get just an image so I wonder, where can I get the elements used in the photo? Can I buy them online? Can I make them? Is someone else blogging about it? That’s when I find myself off on a wild goose chase in search of how to recreate or buy what inspires me.

Instead of keeping all this knowledge to myself, I decided to share it with you. At My Rustic House you will find rustic inspired home decor, tutorials on how to create your own, down home cooking recipes, where to buy guides, and much more.

Eventually, I hope to sell our handcrafted creations as well as my friends. If you have something you’d like to showcase on this site, feel free to contact me anytime. I’d love to hear from you.
